Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame® and ContraFlex® Piping Protection provides integrated insulation and passive fire protection (PFP) capable of withstanding both onshore and offshore environmental conditions.

Pipe runs will typically contain a large number of fittings such as tees, reducers, elbows as well as valves and flanges which also require protection. For pipe coating along with tees, reducers and elbows; Advanced Insulation currently offers a range of ContraFlame® phenolic foam products and ContraFlex® jackets to coat a wide variety of sizes.

ContraFlame® C50 type phenolic foam is a hand applied or pre-moulded unique syntactic foam designed for ‘life in field’ protection with an outer GRP D2004 laminate. ContraFlex® jackets provide removable protection, ideal for equipment subject to regular maintenance. Often, a combination of ContraFlame® and ContraFlex® products are supplied in order to provide the best protection possible, thermal insulation, ease of maintenance and prolonged life in service.

ContraFlame C50 JF120

ContraFlame C50 hand applied coatings provide integrated insulation and passive fire protection (PFP) capable of withstanding harsh offshore weather conditions whilst providing high integrity corrosion protection. The system has been tested in both tubular and planar scenarios to cover a wide range of applications including pipework both above and below the splash zone.

Construction:

  • Hand applied C50 phenolic foam
  • D2004 GRP laminate system

Features:

  • The system is designed for “life of field” operation, which in normal operating conditions will be in excess of 30 years.
  • Offers J90 protection on tubular applications certified by Lloyd’s Register
  • A combined lightweight system providing Passive Fire Protection, Insulation and Corrosion Prevention
  • High blast resistance of up to 4.2 bar
  • Maximum and minimum operating temperature of the asset can be from + 185º to -196ºC
  • The system is suitable in freezing rain, UV, Flare Radiation (5kW/m2 with a presumed temperature of +150ºC), de-icing steam and total submersion in seawater.
  • The system has been tested for thermal shock testing and met these criteria by shock cooling an externally coated vessel from +110 to –170ºC in 10 minutes.  No deterioration of the bond to the metal base or reduction in adhesion was found nor any spalling or cracking of the material.
  • The system is suitable for the splash and tidal zones and down to -5 metres below LAT
  • The system enables the application to the equipment prior to delivery to site, without the usual concerns (crushing and damage) associated with more traditional forms of PFP/Thermal Insulation.
  • Materials do not require any form of heat/UV treatment or oven curing process which makes field joint applications on site onshore or offshore very easy

ContraFlame C50 JF120 Halfshells

ContraFlame C50 pre-moulded halfshells are manufactured using the same materials as the ContraFlame hand applied system, with the added benefit of fast installation. Because they are pre-laminated, the halfshells are simply applied and held in place using banding straps. The half shells contain an 8mm gap in order to allow for heat trace cabling over the pipe. C50 halfshells provide integrated insulation and passive fire protection (PFP) capable of withstanding harsh offshore weather conditions whilst providing corrosion prevention. The system has been tested in tubular scenarios making it a perfect solution for piping packages, flare stacks, risers, insulated pipework, or piping requiring heat trace cabling.

Construction:

  • Pre-moulded C50 phenolic foam with outer D2004 GRP laminate system at 50mm thickness
  • Supplied in 1m lengths in half or tri-shells for easy handling
  • Halfshells are bonded together using a fire-rated silicone mastic, and banded in place

ContraFlex Flexible Jackets

ContraFlex PFP jackets offer up to 180minutes of jet fire and pool fire protection. The system is made up of a weatherproof double sided silicone outer cloth, insulation infill and fire barrier material which combine to provide integrated insulation and passive fire protection. ContraFlex has a lesser design life to a phenolic foam insulation system such as ContraFlame C50, however it is removable which lends itself to applications which require regular maintenance and faster installation. As well as excellent passive fire protection properties, ContraFlex jackets are able to be modified with additional insulation layers to provide heat conservation, personnel protection and prolonged fire protection.

Construction:

  • Silicone outer cloth
  • Insulation infill
  • Additional fire proofing layers
  • Jackets range in thickness between 35mm and 120mm total.

Features:

  • Ease of installation – considerably less labour intensive compared with metal clad systems and hand applied foams.
  • Can be easily removed and reinstalled for maintenance purposes efficiently and without damage to the system compared with other passive fire protection materials
  • Can be supplied with access hatches for regular opening/inspection.
  • Bespoke construction to the application, ensuring a tight fit with no flame paths
  • Offer up to J180 fire protection and H180 fire protection for section factor (Hp/A) of up to 199m-1

ContraFlame C20

ContraFlame C20 Riser Protection was developed and tested specifically for flexible pipe protection. The ContraFlame C20 system offers up to 120 minutes of jet fire protection and can be used on large pipe runs or as a penetration seal around piping to allow vibration. The system is based on a unique syntactic silicone which provides totally passive fire protection and combined thermal insulation properties. The system has jet fire testing for protection up to 120 minutes with a backface temperature rise of 267°C at the end of the test. ContraFlame C20 can be used in the splash zone where salt spray and wave slam pose potential threat and where pipework is susceptible to flexure.

  • Flexible C20 silicone material pumped into pre-fabricated mould tools

Features:

  • Jet fire rated up to 120 minutes on riser pipework
  • Provides an alternative to ContraFlex Flexible jackets in splash zone environments.
  • Splash zone friendly
  • Wide tolerance to elevated and low service temperatures (+150°C to -50°C)
