Riser protection
ContraFlame® and ContraFlex® provide passive fire protection and insulation for risers and associated production equipment on topside modules or FPSOs.
Risers can be fixed in place or flexible, depending on the facility. Fixed/rigid risers can be connected vertically from the sea floor up to a fixed offshore topside facility. Flexible risers are often installed to allow restricted movement on floating production rigs. Risers are prone to corrosion from splash and tidal zones and impact damage from floating debris and wave slam.
Advanced Insulation have a number of systems to provide the level of insulation and PFP performance required for your project- whatever the type of riser (rigid or flexible) and whatever additional protection is needed; splash zone protection, corrosion under insulation (CUI) protection and impact resistance.

JF60-200 system JF120-200 system
ContraFlame C50 riser protection coatings provide integrated insulation and passive fire protection (PFP) capable of withstanding harsh offshore weather conditions whilst providing high integrity corrosion protection. The system has a low backface temperature rise when exposed to a jet fire scenario in accordance with oil and gas operator PFP specifications with a requirement of 200°C after 60 or 120 minutes exposure.
Construction:
- Hand applied C50 phenolic foam
- D2004 GRP laminate system
Features:
- Robust coating, suitable for riser pipework
- High blast resistance
- Providing corrosion protection
- Suitable for harsh offshore conditions such as floating debris, wave slam and submersion
- Very low temperature rise below 200°C for each system

JF120 enclosure JF60 enclosure
ContraFlame PFP enclosures offer up to 120 minutes of jet fire protection. The system is based on a unique syntactic phenolic foam and glass reinforced laminate system which combine to provide totally passive fire protection and thermal insulation properties. ContraFlame Enclosures have been developed to maintain a low backface temperature rise in the result of a jet fire, maintaining <200°C after 120 minutes.
Construction:
- Pre-fabricated enclosure made from C50 phenolic foam
- D2004 GRP laminate system.
Features:
- Jet fire rated up to 120 minutes for use on valves, flanges, riser hanger clamps, actuators manway covers and other process equipment.
- Provides an alternative to ContraFlex Flexible jackets in splash zone environments and high blast applications.
- System can be combined with thermal insulation
- Splash zone friendly
- Wide tolerance to elevated and low service temperatures (+185°C to -196°C)
- Blast resistant up to 4.2 bar

Moulded half shells
ContraFlame® C20 Riser Protection was developed and tested specifically for riser protection. The ContraFlame® C20 system offers up to 120 minutes of jet fire protection. The system is based on a unique syntactic silicone which provides totally passive fire protection and combined thermal insulation properties. The system has jet fire testing for protection up to 120 minutes with a backface temperature rise of 267°C at the end of the test. ContraFlame® C20 can be used in the splash zone where salt spray and wave slam pose potential threat and where pipework is susceptible to flexure.
Construction:
- Flexible C20 silicone material pumped into pre-fabricated mould tools
Features:
- Jet fire rated up to 120 minutes on riser pipework
- Provides an alternative to ContraFlex Flexible jackets in splash zone environments.
- Splash zone friendly
- Wide tolerance to elevated and low service temperatures (+150°C to -50°C)

ContraFlex JF120 Offshore risers
ContraFlex® jackets have been arduously tested for offshore regulations, thus making it suitable for riser applications including pipework, ESDV Valves, flanges, fittings and other equipment above the splash zone. ContraFlex® jackets have been tested for both hydrocarbon jet and pool fire scenarios up to H180 and J180. ContraFlex® jackets have been tested over a wide range of applications such as tubular, planar and corner/edge features and have been approved by ABS, Lloyd’s Register and DNV. The system has been thoroughly tested for water ingress using a specially selected double sided silicone cloth, as well as accelerated age tested in accordance with ISO 20340 under steady state low temperature, UV and salt spray cycles.
Construction:
- Silicone outer cloth
- AES type insulation
- Additional fire proofing layers
Features:
- Ease of installation – considerably less labour intensive compared with metal clad systems
- Can be easily removed and reinstalled for maintenance purposes efficiently and without damage to the system compared with other passive fire protection materials
- Bespoke construction to the application, ensuring a tight fit with no flame paths
- Offer up to J180 fire protection and H180 fire protection for section factor (Hp/A) of up to 199m-1
