Advanced Insulation’s ContraFlame® Lightweight Under Deck and Bulkhead Protection provides a robust light-weight solution for passive fire protection, thermal and acoustic insulation that can safely withstand the rigours of the offshore environment including the splash zone.

Advanced Insulation provides innovative solutions for underdeck applications that reduce weight compared with conventional insulation, whilst adhering to IMO classifications for hydrocarbon pool fire FTP codes. Underdeck solutions have been certified by DNV and Lloyds register for a number of fire scenarios and has been supplied to a number of shipbuilding yards worldwide such as Heerema, SHI, DSME and HHI. Specific applications range from cellar decks, cantilever decks, accommodation modules, processing platforms, local instrument rooms and underside of escape tunnels.

The systems provide hydrocarbon pool fire protection up to H120 with extensive testing covering loaded beams, low steel critical temperature requirements, penetrations and adhesion to a number of paint systems. There are currently two syntactic phenolic materials used by Advanced Insulation for underdeck applications, C50 and MS400. In some instances, a combination of the two materials may be used depending on the fire scenario and ease of application.

Advanced Insulation have a number of systems to provide the level of insulation and PFP performance required for your project backed with multiple tests including noise control, adhesion, fire, blast, loaded beam fireproofing and bulkhead. Advanced Insulation also provide materials for piping penetrations with the use of ContraFlame C20 fireproof silicone.

ContraFlame MS400 lightweight underdeck system

ContraFlame MS400 dry fix panels provide integrated insulation and passive fire protection (PFP) capable of withstanding harsh offshore weather conditions whilst providing high integrity corrosion protection. The system has undergone numerous fire tests enabling the system to be applied to the most arduous scenarios including pool, jet and high heat flux fire tests. MS400 has an extremely low thermal conductivity making it an excellent insulator and panels can be supplied in a range of thicknesses to suit the project requirements.

MS400 offers up to 50% weight saving compared to alternative systems, whilst providing the same thermal performance and fire protection.

Construction:

  • Dry fix MS400 phenolic foam panels (1m x 1m) bonded to the underdeck
  • D2004 GRP laminate system
  • Phenolic angles may be supplied at termination points

Features:

  • The systems may be terminated onto the anti-corrosion coated steelwork or onto a phenolic angle for a wider range of applications
  • Applications eliminate the need for additional welding
  • Systems are designed for ease of application in difficult confined underdeck application spaces
  • Materials do not require any form of heat/UV treatment or oven curing process which makes field joint applications on site onshore or offshore very easy
  • Integrated passive fire protection (PFP) and insulation up to H120/J120/HHF60
  • Weight saving: MS400 is a lightweight phenolic foam panel with nominal density 80kg/m3
  • Thermal conductivity of 0.032 Wm-1K-1
  • The system is designed for “life of field” operation, which in normal operating conditions will be in excess of 20 years.
  • A combined lightweight system providing Passive Fire Protection, Insulation and Corrosion Prevention

ContraFlame C50 acoustic underdeck system

The ContraFlame C50 Acoustic Under Deck H60 system was developed specifically for the Chevron Wheatstone project. The system has been designed in order to provide 51dB Rw of sound reduction using a dual layer panel system with integrated air gap, thermal insulation and fire protection up to H60. The system was developed and tested at sound research laboratories in a chamber to achieve the required sound reduction index (Rw).

This innovative solution was a first of its kind and uses a C50 preformed panel hanging from the bottom flanges of the primary and secondary steels. where noise control is not required in other areas, the C50 hand applied system can be used in order to provide H60 protection. The system is fully sealed with ContraFlame D2004 GRP laminate and can be terminated directly onto approved anti-corrosion coatings or a phenolic angle.

Construction:

  • Pre-fabricated C50 phenolic foam panels
  • D2004 GRP laminate system.
  • Big head fasteners coated in neoprene to assist holding of suspended panels

Features:

  • The system is designed for “life of field” operation, which in normal operating conditions will be in excess of 20 years.
  • A combined lightweight system providing Passive Fire Protection, Insulation and Corrosion Prevention
  • High blast resistance of up to 4.2 bar
  • Maximum and minimum operating temperature of the asset can be from + 185º to -196ºC
  • The system is suitable in freezing rain, UV, Flare Radiation (5kW/m2 with a presumed temperature of +150ºC), de-icing steam and total submersion in seawater.
  • The system has been tested for thermal shock testing and met these criteria by shock cooling an externally coated vessel from +110 to –170ºC in 10 minutes.  No deterioration of the bond to the metal base or reduction in adhesion was found nor any spalling or cracking of the material.
  • Materials do not require any form of heat/UV treatment or oven curing process which makes field joint applications on site onshore or offshore very easy

ContraFlame C50 underdeck system

ContraFlame C50 hand applied coatings provide integrated insulation and passive fire protection (PFP) capable of withstanding harsh offshore weather conditions whilst providing high integrity corrosion protection. The system has been hydrocarbon pool fire tested up to H60 and has a healthy track record in harsh environments including offshore North Sea.

C50 is used often used within the MS400 underdeck applications as a smoothing putty, for jet fire rated coatback on beams and where access is restricted.

  • The system is designed for “life of field” operation, which in normal operating conditions will be in excess of 20 years.
